Wal-Mart and Class Inequalities Essay -- increasing class inequality

Wal-Mart has become a staple company in many communities. It is a place where individuals can find most of their needs, and many of their wants. The appeal of Wal-Mart can be found in its slogan, Always Low Prices. It is the appeal of low prices during a time of economic recession that entices consumers. What many consumers do not recognize are the means by which Wal-Mart ensures these low prices. The media coerage of Wal-Mart during the recent months has not been fortunate towards the company, and with lawsuits pending regarding issues such as low wages, anti- essence practices, and sexual discrimination, Wal-Mart provides an avenue for examining media and alternative media depictions of the issues. This analysis will determine the extent to which media sources provide information on Wal-Mart and the allegations, and how this kitty is working to reduce class inequality. The focus will more broadly develop an argument which claims that superclass interests are the drivi ng force behind our media, and therefore our motion-picture show to critique of the system is limited. There are three articles that will be referenced during this analysis. The first article is taken from the mainstream media publication USA Today. Wal-Mart takes hits on prole treatment Lawsuits, unions slam megaretailer(Armour, 2003) argues that Wal-Mart is coming under attack from critics who argue workers are underpaid, women are discriminate against, and illegal tactics are being deployed to kill unionization efforts. Armour (2003) states, company officials say they dont know why the attacks are coming now, and they also say the allegations are unfounded. The next statement do during the article states that Wal-Mart employees agree with the statement. The author continues reporting on the issues at stake, but focuses mostly on how unions may be less relevant in straight offs world. The article makes mention of both sides of the argument, but the rhetoric and ter minology used leans towards the portrayal of Wal-Mart as a victim of biased attacks to further union interests in the market. Perucci and Wysong (1999) would argue that this article is a perfect example of selective reporting, unstated but routine news reporting policies and practices that produce a preponderance of flattering news media coverage of superclass-favored issues (1999160). It ... ...tive media portrayals of an issue. Ultimately this assignment was beneficial to my perspective on class issues. It exposed me to multitudes of informational sources ranging from mainstream to alternative. It was also interesting to see the ways in which issues are portrayed differently, and as I mentioned other the lack of blaming the system is extremely interesting. The various sources opened my eyes to the reality of media impact and control over our lives and opinions. It is difficult to see beyond the obvious appeal of corporations such as Wal-Mart, but this shoul d be apparent to me after all these years of sociology. Albinism     The word "albinism" refers to a group of inherited conditions. Peoplewith albinism have little or no blusher in their eyes, skin, or hair. They haveinherited elements that do not make the usual amounts of a pigment called melanin.One person in 17,000 has some token of albinism. Albinism affects people from allraces. Most children with albinism are born to parents who have normal hair andeye color for their ethnic backgrounds. Albinism is found on the eleventhchromosome, portion q, loci 14-21.Oculocutaneous albinism involves the eyes, hair, and skin. Ocular albinisminvolves primarily the eye. People with ocular albinism may have slightlightening of hair and skin colors as well, compared to other family members. At march researchers have found 10 different types of oculocutaneous albinism,and five types of ocular albinism. Newer laboratory research studying DNA hasshown that there are numerous types of changes in the genes of those withalbi nism, including inwardly families.The most common types of oculocutaneous albinism are called "ty-negative"and "ty-positive". Persons with ty-negative albinism have no melaninpigmentation, and more difficulty with vision. Those with ty-positive albinismhave very slight pigmentation, and generally less severe visual difficulties.Tests were make on the hair roots of individuals with albinism, to tell thesetypes of albinism apart. However, these hair tests cannot identify types ofalbinism, particularly in young children, whose pigment systems are immature.Therefore hair tests are not helpful in predicting the extent of visualdisability of a child.     "Ty-Neg" (also called Type 1A) albinism results from a genetic defect inan enzyme called tyrosinase. Tyrosinase helps the body to change the amino deadlytyrosine into pigment. The genetic defect that causes albinism in other types ofalbinism is unknown, but it is speculated that it involves o ther enzymes used tomake pigment.     Albinism is passed from parents to their children through genes. Fornearly all types of albinism both parents must carry an albinism gene to have achild with albinism. Parents may have normal pigmentation but still carry thegene. When both parents carry the gene, and neither parent has albinism, thereis a one in four chance at each pregnancy that the baby will be born withalbinism. This type of inheritance is called autosomal recessive allele inheritance.     If a parent has a child with albinism, it means the parent must carrythe albinism gene. Until recently, unless a person has albinism or has a childwith albinism, there was no way of knowing whether he or she carries the gene

They are documents that strive for ideas that in opposition to one another. The Communist Manifesto and The Constitution of the United States both include what the relationship between an individual and society should be about. Karl Marx and Frederick Engels wrote the Communist Manifesto. Marx and Engels talked about in the Communist Manifesto what they thought to be the way to solve the problems in the world during that time. Those problems dealt with society, but chiefly the poor. They thought that nation during those times were too dependent on money and how much of it they made. They wrote the manifesto in hopes to change society. The form of government they used to do this was by way of the Communist Party. The Communists, therefore, are on the one hand, practically, the most advanced and resolute section of th e working-class parties of every countryi Within the Communist Party everyone is equal, and all property belongs to the state. The Constitution of the United States on the other hand was written to restrict the amount of power the government could pitch. It allows people to have property unlike the Communist Manifesto. Within the Constitution, it is stipulated that the people have control over how much power the government has. G.C.S.E English and English Literature Coursework Poetry AssignmentWe have been set the task to compare the ship potbellyal in which the poems Ihave studied deal with the passing of time. The triple poems are Tohis Coy Mistress, Ozymandias and To the Virgins to Make Much ofTime. All three of the poems clearly deal with the passing of time in distinguishable ways. To his Coy Mistress is more or less a man telling a charwomanthat if he had all the time in the world, he would spend it with her.In the To the Virgins to Make Much of Time a man is trying topersuade a woman to make much of her youth with the time she is given.Ozymandias is about time in a different way by saying no tyranny canbeat time like the statue in the poem. This poem is different to Tohis Coy Mistress and To the Virgins to Make Much of Time. Its notabout recognize or anything else to do with the other poems but the passingof time.In the To his Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell the poet wants topersuade his coy mist ress to have a monetary relationship with him.Marvell splits the poem into three different stanzas, each one with adifferent purpose. The first stanza is an introduction, Marvell speaksabout what he wants to do with the Mistress, he speaks about time, andhow it is not on their side. The second stanza introduces that time istheir enemy he uses fear in this section to try and persuade her. Andin the final section he changes the somebody in which he writes in henow talks about we, he speaks about how when the couple are togetherthey can tackle the enigma of time. This is very well thought outbecause it is clear what he wants, he splits up the stanzaseffectively and makes the whole picture clear in your head, and thisis a... ...o are aboutsomeone who has most of hers yet to come. However they use differenttactics to show the passage of time to the reader, and explore howtime lasts as long as a person does. The poets both use day tones tohelp them convey this, they are day the time th at has or will pass. InOzymandias the day is for something that was one time hugely impressivebut over time has deteriorated into nothing, whilst in the other twopoems the mourning is for something that over time to come will lapseinto jazz persons life.I thought that Ozymandias was the most appealing. I think thisbecause its different to the other two poems and sometimes differentis better. It shows use that regular if something is hugely impressive,over time it will deteriorate into nothing. I think it shows this in avery effective way and could appeal to many different people.

Sammy the Social Climber in A & P    Men lead go to extreme measures to impress women. This is the case in the story A & P written by John Updike. Sammy, who is a cashier at a supermarket, displays a classic example of a man trying to impress a woman. His rash decision to quit his job was a foul decision and will definitely have an adverse effect on him in the future. Sammy seems doomed from the very first sentence when he says, In walks trinity girls in nothing but bathing suits (Updike 1026). He notices every little detail about the girls from the color of their bathing suits to their tan lines. When she puts the snacks down on the counter, Sammy notices that her give are free. While he is wondering where the money is going to come from, she proceeds to pull the dollar bills out of the hollow at the center of her nubbled intercept top (Updike 1027). This gesture puts Sammy in total awe of the girl, and this is the turning point, this is when he makes his decision that he should try to impress her. His big chance comes when the store manager, Lengel, makes a visit to Sammys line. Girls, this isnt the beach, is the first thing Lengel says to the girls when he sees them (Updike 1028). Queenie explains that her mother sent her to pick up some herring snacks, implying that since her mother sent her it is absolutely fine for her to be in the store with only a bathing suit on. While Lengel and Queenie are arguing, Sammy visualizes himself at Queenies house during a party. In his imagination he sees, her father and the other men were standing around in ice-cream coats and bow tie s and the women were in sandals picking up herring snacks on toothpicks out a big glass plate and they were all holding drinks the color of water with olives and sprigs of mint in them (Updike 1028).
